Leveraging Distributed Tracing and Container Cloning for Replay Debugging of Microservices
Microservice architectures have gained prominence in recent years for building large-scale industrial distributed systems. However, microservice architectures make the usage of replay debugging, a powerful technique for finding root causes of faults, very challenging because of the polyglot (written in several languages) services, large accumulated state of services, and tight latency limits imposed by long hop-chains. This work attempts to provide a framework for enabling replay debugging in production microservice applications. We study 25 real-world faults in microservice systems collected from diverse sources, categorize these faults by fault symptoms, and create 15 application agnostic mutation operators for microservices. We then propose a language agnostic replay debugging framework for microservice applications that uses a distributed tracing system to record network requests and enables replay of those requests on cloned service containers running in a debug environment. A key component of this framework is an anomaly detector that uses span-level and container-level monitoring to detect fault symptoms found in our study and localizes faults to trace level so that faulty traces can be easily replayed to find the root cause. An open-source microservices application injected successively with the mutation operators is used for an evaluation that shows that our framework is upto an order of magnitude lighter-weight than language-specific recording tools such as Chrome DevTools or VisualVM and can help in finding root causes of 9 out of 15 mutations at a line or function level
Text Summarization and Translation of Summarized Outcome in French
Automatic text summarization is increasingly required with the exponential growth of unstructured text through increasing internet and social media usage across the globe. The various approaches are outcomes of extraction-based and abstraction-based. In Extraction-based summarization, the extracted content from the original data, is typically presented in the same or slightly modified form without significant paraphrasing or restructuring. Abstractive methods involve building an internal representation of the original content and then using that representation to generate a summary that may not be present in the original text verbatim. They employ natural language processing techniques, such as language generation models, to paraphrase and rephrase sections of the source document to create a more human-like summary. Abstraction in abstractive summarization is indeed a challenging task because it requires not only linguistic and syntactic understanding but also a deeper semantic understanding of the original content. The evaluation of automatically summarized text through criteria of precision and recall, and various evaluation methods, datasets used for domain based and generic text summarization. This paper proposes the Sentence Length Impact (SLI) algorithm to summarize English text content, which gives 92% accuracy and translating the same in French
"The fruits of independence": Satyajit Ray, Indian nationhood and the spectre of empire
Challenging the longstanding consensus that Satyajit Ray's work is largely free of ideological concerns and notable only for its humanistic richness, this article shows with reference to representations of British colonialism and Indian nationhood that Ray's films and stories are marked deeply and consistently by a distinctively Bengali variety of liberalism. Drawn from an ongoing biographical project, it commences with an overview of the nationalist milieu in which Ray grew up and emphasizes the preoccupation with colonialism and nationalism that marked his earliest unfilmed scripts. It then shows with case studies of Kanchanjangha (1962), Charulata (1964), First Class Kamra (First-Class Compartment, 1981), Pratidwandi (The Adversary, 1970), Shatranj ke Khilari (The Chess Players, 1977), Agantuk (The Stranger, 1991) and Robertsoner Ruby (Robertson's Ruby, 1992) how Ray's mature work continued to combine a strongly anti-colonial viewpoint with a shifting perspective on Indian nationhood and an unequivocal commitment to cultural cosmopolitanism. Analysing how Ray articulated his ideological positions through the quintessentially liberal device of complexly staged debates that were apparently free, but in fact closed by the scenarist/director on ideologically specific notes, this article concludes that Ray's reputation as an all-forgiving, ‘everybody-has-his-reasons’ humanist is based on simplistic or even tendentious readings of his work
Identifying Climate Adjacency for Enhancing Climate Action Using Systems Thinking and Modelling
This paper presents findings from a process aimed at identifying the climate linkages of non-climate focused environment and development projects in India. Findings from four case studies based on workshops using participatory systems thinking are summarized. These climate adjacencies are documented as systems stories using the tools of systems thinking—behavior over time graphs and causal loop diagrams. These place-based stories highlight how the environment and development projects have linkages with climate change mitigation and adaptation. An attempt has been made to convert one of the systems stories into a computable simulation model using system dynamics modelling. A small concept model has been created thus and used to perform simulation runs. Four scenarios have been generated and the results discussed. Our learning from converting feedback maps into stock-flow models is presented. The insights generated from interpreting the feedback maps and simulation results are also presented. These insights are then compared and the benefits of simulation evaluated. The paper highlights the need to document climate linkages of non-climate-focused development projects and the benefit of converting systems stories into simulation models for developing operational insights. The important role such methods can play in developing capacities for enhancing climate action is also discussed

How can co-creation improve the engagement of farmers in weather and climate services (WCS) in India
This paper compares how the governance of four agro-met services operating in the same basic area of Maharashtra, India condition the engagement between the users and the providers of the services. The four cases reveal diverse institutional designs and engagement mechanisms for involvement of end-users and intermediary users and partners. The four services studied included a mix between public and private providers; the Agro-met Advisory Services of the Indian Metrological Department (IMD-AAS); IFFCO Kisan agro-met services hosted by the Indian Farmers Fertilisers Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) with funding from the government; Reuters Market Light (RML AgTech), a private firm; and, the Agricultural Meteorological Program of Watershed Organisation Trust’s (WOTR), a civil society organization
Reaching out? Governing weather and climate services (WCS) for farmers
High-quality weather and climate services (WCS) can be critical for communicating knowledge about current and future weather and climate risks for adaptation and disaster risk management in the agricultural sector. This paper investigates the structure and performance of weather and climate services for farmers from a governance perspective. Empirically the paper compares the institutional design and operations of agro-meteorological services in Maharashtra/India and Norway through a ‘most different case study’ approach. The two cases were selected to represent great diversity in location, scale and institutional design. A governance approach based on semi-direct interviews and policy and institutional analysis was combined with local survey data of farmers’ perceptions and use of the services. Despite the fact that the context for the two agromet advisory services was very different from a climate-weather, eco-agriculture, and socio-institutional angle, the analysis reveals great similarities in the services structures and critical governance challenges. In both countries the agromet services communicated knowledge that was largely perceived not to be well tailored to farmers’ needs for decisions in specific crops- and farm operations, spatially too coarse to address local issues, and, often unreliable or inaccurate in terms of the quality of data. Farmers did, however, respond positively to specific and locally relevant information on e.g., warnings about high rainfall and spread of pests. Observing such similarities across very diverse contexts enhances the generalization potential, precisely because they evolved under very different circumstances. Similar observations find support in the wider WCS literature. Based on the empirical findings, we propose a more deliberate approach to institutional design of WCS in order to enhance governance performance and co-creation of the services at local, district and national scales. It is suggested that greater participation of farmers and agricultural extension agents in the co-creation of these services is a necessary means of improving the services, supported by the WCS literature. However, we insist that greater participation is only likely to materialize if the deficiencies in institutional design and knowledge quality and relevance are addressed to greater extent than done today. The comparison between the two services shows that Norway can learn from India that a more ambitious scope and multiple forms of communication, including the use of social media/WhatsApp groups, can facilitate greater awareness and interest among farmers in multi-purpose agromet services for multi-way communication. India can learn from Norway that a more integrated and decentralized institutional design can strengthen the network attributes of the services, foster co-creation, and improve participation of both poor and large-scale farmers and extension agents
